Thanks to the advances of Internet of Things (IoT), the increasingly low cost of sensors and actuators, the improved network connectivity, the availability of software components and tools to support application development, our environment is increasingly enriched with digital devices that waive themselves into the fabric of our physical space and objects.
Forecasts suggest that by 2030 around 50 billions of IoT devices will be in use around the world, creating a massive web of interconnected 'things' that are making our spaces 'smart', i.e., responsive and adaptive to the user’s behavior and to the change of environmental properties, enabling new interactive applications that exploit multiple paradigms of interaction and empower users and the quality of their life in many different domains, from health/wellbeing to education, work, entertainment, and tourism/cultural heritage.
Main Topics
The format of this Summer School consists of a mix of lectures, case studies presentations, demos in real smart spaces installations at the university, at industry venues, and in therapeutic centers. These activities are interplayed with autonomous and supervised teamwork on project design and business planning; and team-building activities.
The academic speakers are Professors and Researchers from Polytechnic of Milan and from top-level research institutions in Europe. Industry speakers from national and international start-ups and companies contribute to the educational journey. They will present relevant case studies from EIT Digital Innovation Activities and other projects in the Smart Spaces field, they will discuss their views on innovation in different application domains, and how Smart Spaces technology impacts the markets where they operate. Industry speakers also contribute with business cases to stimulate business development projects performed during the Summer School. Expert coaches (teachers, PhD students and Post-docs from Politecnico di Milano) supervise the attendants’ project work and support them in all their activities.
Preliminary Schedule
Intended Audience
The Summer School is open to young professionals as well as Bachelor, Master or PhD students, who want to deep-dive in emerging digital technologies and learn how to turn these technologies into business. This will enable them to become innovators in the field of Digital Interactive Smart Spaces, as designers/developers/project managers in start-ups or larger companies.
As the programme has a focus on business innovation and entrepreneurship, there is no need to have specific technical backgrounds or any coding knowledge to join our Summer School.
Location
The Summer School takes place at the Main Campus of Polytechnic of Milan, in the facilities of the Department of Electronics. Polytechnic of Milan is an Italian university institute of science and technology, founded in 1863. The fields of study and research include the three macro-areas of engineering, architecture, and design. Polytechnic of Milan is ranked 1st among the Italian universities, 9th in Europe.
Milan is one of the largest cities in Italy, famous for its wealth of historical and modern sights, its vibrant atmosphere, its shopping, opera, nightlife, and cultural heritage (https://www.yesmilano.it/informazioni-turistiche-infopoint). We will organize cultural visits in the city (Milan Cathedral, the Sforza Castle) and its surroundings (Como Lake), an aperitif in one of the stylish places (the Navigli Area) and free time at the large swimming pool adjacent to Polytechnic Campus.
Milano is easily accessible by train from everywhere in Italy and from its 2 airports (Malpensa and Linate). Polytechnic of Milan Main Campus is connected to airports and train stations by train and metro. Its metro stop is PIOLA- Green Line.
