Overview
Thanks to the advances of Internet of Things, the increasingly low cost of sensors and actuators, the improved network connectivity, the availability of software components and tools to support application development, our environment is increasingly enriched with digital devices that waive themselves into the fabric of our physical space and objects. Forecasts suggest that by 2030 around 50 billion of IoT devices will be in use around the world, creating a massive web of interconnected "things" that are making our spaces "smart", i.e., responsive and adaptive to the user’s behavior and to the change of environmental properties, enabling new interactive applications to empower users and the quality of their life in many different fields.
The Summer School addresses the challenges of this scenario by providing a multidisciplinary discussion of Smart Spaces from different perspectives: development tools (hardware and software frameworks); interaction paradigms (e.g., gestures, touch, eye gaze, voice, tangible manipulation.), UX evaluation methods; application domains (e.g., home/work automation, automotive, culture, health/well-being, education, entertainment); ethical, sociological and psychological issues.
Intended Audience
The intensive one-week Summer School is devoted to Master/PhD students, researchers and professionals who want build technological and methodological competences. This will enable them to become innovators in the field of Smart Spaces, as academic researchers or designers/developers in start-ups or larger companies.
Location
Como is an internationally known tourism destination easily accessible from Malpensa airport (30-40' by train/bus) and downtown Milan (40' by train). Villa del Grumello (www.villadelgrumello.it/it/) is an impressive historical building surrounded by a magnificent garden on the shore of Como Lake. It is located 10' walking distance (5' by bus) from downtown Como.
Format and Program
The one-week intensive Summer School consists of a mix of lectures, case studies presentation, and project-based teamwork on Smart Space design. The speakers are Professors and Researchers from Polytechnic of Milan and from top-level research institutions in Europe, Australia and Israel. PhD students and Post-docs from Polytechnic of Milan and other Italian universities supervise the group’s project work. In the last day of the course, the attendants’ groups are required to present their proposal for an innovative Smart Space application, including UX concept and technology feasibility study.
For PhDs students, the attendance to the Summer School and the project work account for 5 ECTS recognized by the Polytechnic of Milan.
